Media Advisory - Launch of the Close
the Door on Nuclear Testing Campaign
A video campaign to promote greater awareness of the need to outlaw nuclear testing once and for all was launched today in Vienna, Austria.
The CLOSE THE DOOR ON NUCLEAR TESTING campaign is an initiative of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). To watch the video go to www.youtube.com/user/CloseDoorOnNukeTests
The CTBTO has opened an online call for action, encouraging people everywhere to add their voices to the campaign by submitting a video message or photograph. The aim: to build momentum towards a world in which nuclear testing and, subsequently, nuclear weapons are consigned to history.
The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty bans all nuclear explosions everywhere, by everyone. It opened for signature 15 years ago and is supported by more than 90 percent of countries worldwide. But until the nine remaining nuclear holder States ratify the Treaty it cannot truly become part of international law.
With a major ministerial conference on the Treaty taking place at the United Nations in New York on 23 September, the time is right to engage with the public – especially young people, for whom we hold the world in trust, said Tibor Tóth, Executive Secretary of the CTBTO. “The Close the Door on Nuclear Testing video campaign is an important step in that direction,” he said.
